Best proof of the quality of the Linotype-Hell Saphir Ultra2 (LinoColor Saphir Ultra 2 in America) is that a scan can be enlarged to 36 inches across on a wide format inkjet printer.

To test the Linotype-Hell I simply placed a Guatemalan Maya textile on the flatbed scanner. Scan was at 600 dpi since this was the full dimensions of the scanning bed. I calculated that the 1200 dpi optical rating was for the sweet spot down the middle, and unlikely over the entire surface of the bed.

I estimated that 600 was probably the optical resolution on the rest of the bed area.

This scan was then fed to an Encad 600 wide format printer (the Ilford NovaJet 600i). Here are the colorful results (keeping in mind that this is a snapshot of the print with a Nikon CoolPix which JPEGs the image; then the image was shrunk in size and JPEGed again to pass over the Internet. This means that the original quality is much better than what you see here.

Powered by Ilford's RIPStar (Onyx Graphics PosterShop software RIP) on a Windows NT print server connected with a Mac computer.
